Rocket Deployed CanSat

A CanSat is a pseudo satellite that simulates small scale orbital systems such as CubeSats. CanSats are often launched to high altitudes using balloons or rockets to simulate low orbit conditions. Team OwlSat has developed a robust CanSat design that will compete in the US National CanSat Competition.

Auto-Gyro Descent Payload

The US CanSat Competition calls for the creation of an Auto-Gyro Descent Payload. Such a system will include unpowered propellers to slow the descent of the CanSat and maintain aerodynamic stability.

Telemetry Downlink and Wireless Control

In addition to the Auto-Gyro design, the CanSat is also required to be wireless controlled and be capable of transmitting telemetry data. The CanSat is also required to record video of critical moments during the Auto-Gyro deployment and descent.

Design

Team OwlSat has designed an innovative CanSat that includes a collapsing Auto-Gyro system, a custom Mechanical Frame, a unique Camera Stabilization System, robust Communication and Data Handling Systems (CDH) in addition to many other subsystems. The deployable Auto-Gyro will allow for precise control of the CanSat descent speed while the Camera Stabilization System will ensure the optical sensors remain fixed in the appropriate location during descent. Sensor data will also be collected and downlinked to a base station developed in-house using the reliable CDH system.
